Since my last post, my lacrosse team has played in a varsity tournament for our pre-season, and played our first three games, which were all within twenty-four hours of each other. Before I talk about how this season is going so far, I want to talk about how I started lacrosse and a few other interesting things about the sport.
How I started playing
I was introduced to lacrosse by my best friend, Piper, in the fifth grade. Every other day during lunch, she would tell me either about her games, or how her practices went. She had games on Saturdays, so she would tell me about them on Monday. She had practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so she told me what happened on Wednesdays and Fridays. I was so intrigued by what she was telling me that I joined her the next season, which was fall of the sixth grade.
For my very first game, my coach put me in as attack after a bit of the first half. I was one of the only new and unexperienced players on the team at the time, so I was extremely nervous. I had no clue what was going on during the game, but I ended up intercepting a clear from the goalie to one of their midfielders. I took two shots on goal, both missed, because they attempted to check me illegally. I had no clue what happened after that, but coach was enthralled and that was when he decided to put me on defense.

Playing defense I played defense for the first three seasons of my lacrosse career. I did not like playing defense at first, but I grew to love it. As a high defensive player, my job was to stop the fast break of the other team off of the draw heading to our goal. On defense, we have to be constantly moving to guard the attack. A team rule that we have is to remain on the eights while guarding your girl, which means you have to stay by the eight meter mark and then cut with her if she attempts to go through it. After a few seasons of defense, my coach realized I could also benefit as a midfielder because I had a lot of stamina. |
Playing midfield
I have been playing midfield ever since my fourth season of lacrosse. At first he had me as the defensive midfielder, which meant I would mainly be there to help the defense. After another season, he started to play me as center midfielder, which means I would take the draw. The draw starts off the game and it also happens after every goal. I excelled at this position because I had power to pull the ball to my side, and I could jump high to grab it from the other team. I love the feeling of being able to jump over a tall center to grab the ball from them to have a fast break to goal. It gives me such a rush!

New school, new team
For high school, I changed schools and I didn't know anyone that played lacrosse. It was hard at first, being new to everyone, but I was able to prove my ability and win the team over. I was captain last year, and this year.
So far this season, we have played in a pre-season varsity tournament, and played three games in a row. For the tournament, I played center against a six-foot girl, without realizing she was a varsity player. We are a junior varsity team and our coach did not tell us it was a varsity tournament so that way we would play our absolute hardest. We ended up coming in second in the tournament because we lost in overtime. It was a three minute overtime and sudden death. Even though we were disppointed we lost, we still had a lot of fun.
Our first game was against a varsity team that was playing at the junior varsity level. It was an away game and we won in the last twenty seconds by one goal. We won nine to eight, which was a nerve-wracking win! The next game we played was the very next day, also away. We destroyed them eight to zero. This is called a shut-out, which is almost unheard of. I ended up scoring three goals this game! Our next game was our first home game and we won eleven to three. Our coach was so proud of us because we had three games in a row in one week and we managed to prove we were a great team, not just a good team (its a personal saying for our team).
Overall, I love the sport of lacrosse and I love talking about it. I wanted to talk about swimming in this post as well, but I feel like that would make this post way too long! Anyways, thanks for reading and have a great day!
